Description
Pointed Dissecting Forceps for No Scalpel Vasectomy
The second of the two instruments the technique relies on. The tips are sharply pointed and curved, used to puncture the skin over a vas that has already been fixed by the ring forceps, and then to open the track by spreading rather than by cutting.
Puncture and spread
One tip makes the opening, then both are introduced closed and opened to separate the tissue planes. Tissue parts along its natural lines instead of being divided, which is what keeps the opening small and why the approach does not need a blade or a suture to close.
Point condition
Everything depends on the points. A point that has been blunted will push tissue ahead of it instead of entering cleanly, and a point that has rolled will tear on the spread. These are the first things to check and the usual reason an instrument is retired.
Care
Handle the tips as you would a fine scissors point. Do not let them rest against heavier instruments in a tray, inspect under magnification if you have it, and dry the box joint fully. Store with the tips protected and the ratchet released.
