Description
Collin Seizing Forceps
A long ring handled forceps with wide fenestrated jaws, made for taking a deliberate hold on a bulky structure and keeping it. The fenestration is what distinguishes it: tissue rises slightly into the window, so the grip comes partly from shape rather than from pressure alone.
Jaws
Each jaw carries a single large opening with a raised rim. Closed on tissue, the rims meet and the tissue caught between them is held without the crushing force a solid jaw of the same width would need. That is the reason the pattern is preferred where the hold has to last through traction.
A note on naming
The catalog page this pattern appears on is headed uterine seizing forceps, while the instrument is also listed and sold as a kidney elevating forceps. The instrument is the same either way. If you are matching to an existing set, match on the dimensions and the jaw pattern rather than on the name.
Care
Check the jaw rims for flattening, which is the first sign the instrument has been closed harder than the tissue needed. Brush inside the fenestration, not just around it. Dry the box joint and store with the ratchet released.
