Description
Nelaton Probe
A slim malleable probe for exploring a tract, sinus or fistula. One end carries a small bulbous tip that follows a channel without piercing its wall, and the other carries an eye so a seton or a drain can be drawn back through.
Malleable by design
The probe is meant to be shaped to the tract by hand and reshaped for the next case. That is normal use, not damage, and it is why the pattern has survived. It also means the probe should be brought back to straight before it is reprocessed, so a distorted instrument is not mistaken for a shaped one on the next tray.
The eye
The eye takes a thread or a fine drain. Passing the probe and then drawing material back along the same path avoids a second blind pass, which is the main reason to pick this pattern over a plain sound.
Care
Straighten before cleaning. Brush through the eye and along the shaft, and inspect the bulbous tip for flattening, which changes how it sits in a tract. Dry fully and store flat.
