Description
Meyerding Retractor
The Meyerding hand retractor holds soft tissue back in orthopedic and spinal surgery. It comes in a small blade group and a large blade group.
Meyerding hand retractor: small toothed blades
The small toothed blades measure 7×4, 10×3, 10×4, 16×5 and 18×7 mm. They all sit on an 18 cm instrument. So they suit small approaches and tight working spaces.
Large blades
Large blades measure 50 x 16, 75 x 25 and 90 x 50 mm. Then they come on a longer 22.5 cm instrument. As a result, they hold thick muscle along the spine.
Spinal use
Spine surgeons use it to hold the paraspinal muscles aside. However, orthopedic teams also use it around joints and bone. Therefore both services often share the same stock.
Choosing a group
Small approaches call for a small Meyerding hand retractor with teeth. Instead, open spinal work usually needs the large blades for depth. That way each case gets the right hold on tissue.
Cleaning Meyerding hand retractor
Brush the teeth on the small blades carefully, since tissue lodges there. Next, rinse and dry every blade, large and small. Finally, store small blades in a rack so the teeth stay intact.
