Description
Ollier Retractor
The Ollier retractor is an orthopedic rake for holding muscle and soft tissue aside. It measures 24 cm and has a rake end 36 mm wide.
Two depths
Choose 36 x 30 mm or 36 x 60 mm. So the shallow end suits a superficial layer, and the deep one reaches below thick muscle. Also, both options share the same 36 mm width.
Rake end
The rake-type end grips muscle rather than sliding off it. Then the assistant keeps a steady pull on thick tissue. As a result, bone stays in clear view for the surgeon.
Length
At 24 cm, it gives room for a firm two-handed grip if the tissue fights back. However, it stays short enough for limb work. Therefore it fits most orthopedic trays.
In orthopedic cases
Surgeons use it around the hip, knee and long bones. Meanwhile, the deeper option helps in heavy thigh or buttock muscle. Plus, pairing an Ollier retractor with a Langenbeck covers most layers.
Reprocessing Ollier retractor
Clean between the rake teeth with a stiff brush, since tissue lodges there. Next, rinse well and look for bent tips under good light. Finally, dry it and keep the rake end covered in storage.
