McKissock (Collyer) Caliper

The McKissock caliper is a large caliper, 30 cm long, with curved arms and a centimetre scale at the hinge. It follows the Collyer pattern, so the McKissock caliper spans wide body measurements while its curves clear the surface between the two points.

What the McKissock caliper measures

Use it for straight line distances across the body surface, for example the widths and distances that plastic surgeons record when planning breast and body contouring procedures. The curved arms reach around contours, so the reading reflects the true distance between the tips rather than the curve of the skin.

Using a McKissock caliper

Place the tips on the two landmarks, keep the arms clear of the skin, and then read the scale. Record each measurement straight away, because comparisons between sides and between visits depend on consistent notes. Also use the same landmarks each time.

Care

Wipe the tips after each patient, and clean the hinge and scale. Then dry and store the caliper flat.
