Matrix Band Forceps

Matrix band forceps help a dentist or assistant handle the thin metal band that forms a temporary wall around a tooth. That wall lets restorative material be packed against it, so a proximal contact can be rebuilt. This page sells one model, so there are no sizes or patterns to compare.

Why Bands Need Their Own Forceps

Matrix bands are thin and springy, and they slip easily from gloved fingers. As a result, setting one around a molar can take several tries. A dedicated forceps gives a controlled grip, so the band goes where you aim it and stays there while the retainer is tightened.

A Typical Class II Sequence

First, select a band and load it into the retainer. Next, use the forceps to guide the band around the tooth and below the gingival margin of the box. Then tighten the retainer and wedge the contact. Finally, check the band with an explorer before you place any material.

Adjusting a Seated Band

Sometimes a band sits too high or catches on a cusp. In that case, the forceps let you nudge it into position without removing the retainer. Also, they help when removing the band after the filling, because the thin edge is hard to pinch by hand.

Caring for the Jaws

Restorative material and bonding agent can build up on the tips. So clean them promptly after each case. In addition, open and close the forceps to check that the joint moves smoothly.

The forceps are stainless steel and get a joint and tip check in the United States at our Atlanta site. They ship non-sterile, so reprocess them through cleaning and an autoclave cycle before patient use. Intrace USA warrants these band forceps three years against manufacturing defects, including the joint.

Visit the ASTM F899 page for the steel standard. More restorative tools are in the 656 restorative category, and the Tofflemire matrix retainers pair naturally with these forceps. Our FAQs answer common questions.
