Technique tips

Lubricate the blades and insert them closed along the axis of the canal. Then open them slowly until you have a clear view. Because the blade is narrow, you may need to rotate it to see each wall in turn. Also, use good lighting, since a slim blade lets in less light than a wider one. At the end, close the blades fully before withdrawing. Also, the slim profile suits patients with a tight or tender canal, where a wider blade would cause discomfort.

Care of the Mathieu rectal speculum

Soak it briefly in an enzymatic cleaner if debris has dried. Then brush the narrow blade gently, rinse it and dry it by hand. Also, look along the blade edges for nicks before you pack it.
