Description
Mathieu Catheter Introducing Instrument
A long handled instrument for taking hold of a catheter tip and placing it. Two lengths are stocked, 20 cm and 28 cm, chosen by the depth of the approach.
What it is for
Where a catheter has to be introduced under direct vision rather than fed blind, the tip has to be held securely without being crushed and steered without the operator hand blocking the view. That is the job this class of instrument does, and length is the main variable between them.
Choosing the length
The 20 cm instrument is the more controllable of the two and suits a shallow approach. The 28 cm reaches further at the cost of some feel at the tip. If you are replacing an instrument from an existing set, match the length rather than assuming, since the two are not interchangeable in use.
Care
Clean the jaw faces with the instrument open and check that they still meet cleanly, since a catheter is only held reliably by jaws that close parallel. Dry the joint thoroughly and store open rather than latched.
