Description
Millin Ligature Carrying Forceps
The member of the Millin family made for passing a ligature rather than holding tissue. The jaw is forked with an eye through it, so a tie can be caught, carried around a pedicle and released without the surgeon taking a hand into the field.
Why a forked jaw
Passing a tie deep in the retropubic space with a plain forceps means feeding the ligature blind and hoping it stays in the jaw. The fork holds it positively, and the eye lets it slip free when the jaw opens. Combined with the Millin curve, that gives a reach into the pelvis that a straight instrument cannot manage without the handles fouling the wound.
A note on the jaw options
The catalog shows this body with three interchangeable jaw patterns, and the forked jaw is the one that carries a ligature. If you need the smooth or the toothed jaw on the same shank, those are the capsule and lobe holding patterns and they are listed separately.
Care
Check the fork for spring. A fork that has splayed will drop a tie. Brush through the eye rather than around it, dry the box joint fully, and store with the ratchet released so the joint is not held under load.
