Description
Martin Retractor
The Martin retractor holds back skin, fat and muscle while an assistant keeps steady tension. General and orthopedic teams reach for it when a wound needs a firm rake.
Prong count
You can order two, three, four or six prongs. So a narrow incision takes two prongs, while a broad wound spreads the load over six. Also, every prong version measures 22 cm.
Sharp or blunt tips
Sharp prongs bite into fascia and resist slipping under pull. However, blunt prongs sit more kindly near vessels and nerves. Therefore many trays keep one of each.
The blade version
Instead of prongs, one option carries a single 105 x 27 mm blade. It measures 26 cm, so it reaches a little deeper. Plus, a smooth blade spreads pressure over a wider strip of tissue.
Where it fits
Orthopedic wounds often call for a Martin retractor with sharp prongs to hold muscle aside. Meanwhile, general surgeons use the blunt rakes for fat and skin edges. That way one pattern covers many openings.
Cleaning Martin retractor
Rinse blood from between the prongs before it dries. Then scrub each tine with a soft brush and check that no tip has bent. Finally, dry the rake fully and store it so sharp points cannot snag other tools.
