Description
Israel Retractor
The Israel retractor uses a broad, blunt rake to hold the abdominal wall and deep muscle. It measures 23.5 cm and comes in four blade sizes.
Four sizes
Blades measure 40 x 40, 45 x 50, 50 x 60 and 70 x 70 mm. So the small blade suits a lean patient, and the largest grips a thick wall. Also, they all share one length.
Blunt rake
Blunt tines grip tissue without cutting into it. Then the rake spreads pull across a wide strip. As a result, it holds muscle securely with less focal pressure.
Hand-held control
An assistant can adjust the angle as the case goes on. However, a large rake takes a firm hand over time. Therefore teams often rotate who holds it.
Where it helps
Abdominal surgeons use an Israel retractor to lift the wall in open cases. Meanwhile, others use it for deep muscle layers. Plus, the 70 x 70 mm blade suits large openings.
Looking after Israel retractor
Brush between each tine to clear trapped tissue. Next, rinse the rake and handle in clean water. Finally, dry it thoroughly and keep the large blade from pressing on other items.
