Description
Volkmann Retractor
The Volkmann retractor is a rake used in orthopedic and general surgery. Choose 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 prongs in lengths of 20, 22 or 23 cm.
Pick your prongs
A single prong gives a precise, narrow hold. However, four or six prongs spread across a wider tissue edge. So one pattern covers fine and broad retraction.
Sharp, blunt or semi-blunt
Sharp prongs grip skin and tough fascia well. By contrast, blunt prongs protect vessels and nerves nearby. Then semi-blunt tips sit between the two for mixed tissue types.
Three lengths
The 20 cm size suits superficial work on the limbs. Meanwhile, the 22 and 23 cm sizes add reach for thicker tissue. Plus, longer handles keep the assistant clear of the field.
The single-blade option
Also, a standard single-blade version replaces the rake with a flat blade. That helps where prongs might snag smooth tissue. Many orthopedic trays carry both a rake and a blade Volkmann retractor.
Reprocessing Volkmann retractor
Use a narrow brush between the prongs to clear tissue and bone debris. Then rinse thoroughly and look for bent points. Finally, protect the tips during storage so they stay sharp or smooth as intended.
