Description
Martin Pelvimeter
The Martin pelvimeter is a caliper for measuring external pelvic diameters. It measures about 33 cm from end to end and carries a reading scale for direct results.
External pelvimetry
External pelvimetry records distances between bony landmarks of the pelvis. So the clinician places the caliper tips on each landmark with the patient lying comfortably. Then the scale gives the reading directly.
Built-in scale
The built-in scale removes the need for a separate measuring tape or ruler. As a result, one person can take and note each measurement. Also, repeat readings stay quick and simple when a student or clinician wants to check a figure.
Uses today
Modern obstetrics relies far less on external pelvimetry than it did in the past. However, the instrument still serves in teaching and some anthropometric work. In addition, it suits historical collections of obstetric and anatomical instruments.
Martin or Breisky
A Martin pelvimeter handles external diameters across the pelvis. By contrast, the Breisky pattern measures outlet diameters. Therefore, a full pelvimetry set usually includes both patterns for complete coverage.
Cleaning Martin pelvimeter
Wipe the caliper arms with a damp cloth and mild detergent after each use. Next, dry the scale carefully so the markings stay clear. Finally, store it closed in a case to protect the tips and the scale.
