The Breisky pelvimeter is a caliper for measuring pelvic outlet diameters. It comes in one size and suits obstetric assessment as well as teaching programs.

The pelvic outlet

The outlet forms the lower opening of the pelvis, which the baby passes through last. So its dimensions matter when clinicians plan a vaginal delivery. Then a caliper gives the clinician a direct measurement.

Outlet measurement

The transverse outlet diameter runs between the two ischial tuberosities, the sitting bones. Because these points sit close together, a compact caliper suits the task. Also, the clinician can take the reading with the patient in lithotomy.

Uses now

Modern practice uses outlet pelvimetry far less often than it did a century ago. However, the method still features in teaching and some clinical assessments. In addition, many historical and teaching collections include this pattern.

The Breisky pelvimeter covers the outlet, while the Martin pattern covers external diameters. For example, a teaching lab might hold both plus a Baudelocque caliper. That way, students see every classic measurement.

Cleaning Breisky pelvimeter

Clean the tips with an alcohol wipe or a mild detergent after each patient. Next, dry the instrument well and check that it opens and closes smoothly through its range. Finally, keep it in a protective pouch or case so the tips stay true.
