Description
Baudelocque Pelvimeter
The Baudelocque pelvimeter is a caliper for measuring the external conjugate. Clinicians also call that distance the Baudelocque diameter.
The external conjugate
The external conjugate runs from the front of the pubic symphysis to the lower lumbar spine. So the clinician places one tip at each point. Then the reading gives an estimate of the pelvic inlet.
A caliper design
Its caliper form lets the tips reach landmarks on the front and back of the body. Also, one set of hands can place both tips at once. Meanwhile, the one-size design covers the usual range of adult measurements.
Place in obstetrics
Today, ultrasound and clinical assessment have largely replaced external pelvimetry. However, the method still appears in obstetric history teaching. Therefore, the instrument suits training programs and collections.
Named for the diameter
Because it shares its name with the diameter it measures, the Baudelocque pelvimeter stays easy to identify. In addition, it pairs well with the Martin pattern in a teaching set. So students can compare the two designs and what each one measures.
Reprocessing Baudelocque pelvimeter
Wipe the instrument down with a mild detergent solution after each examination or class. Next, dry the tips and any hinge fully to prevent spots. Then store it in a drawer where heavier items cannot bend it.
