Description
Lucas Bone Curette Fig. 88, Double-Ended and Serrated
The Lucas bone curette Fig. 88 is a double-ended surgical curette from the classic Lucas series. On this pattern, the cup rims are serrated. Because of that, the curette bites into granulation tissue and soft bone rather than sliding over it.
What the serrations do
A smooth cup can skate across fibrous tissue at the base of a socket. The serrated rim grips it instead, so each stroke removes more with less pressure. It also helps when you need to scrape a socket wall before placing a graft.
A lighter, hollow handle
The handle is hollow, which makes the curette noticeably lighter. With less weight in the hand, fatigue drops during long surgical sessions. Meanwhile, the diameter stays generous for a secure grip.
Using the Lucas bone curette Fig. 88
After extraction, sweep the cup around the socket walls to clear granulation tissue and debris. You can also use it to enucleate small cyst linings and to carry or pack particulate graft material. Work from the deepest point outward, and irrigate as you go. The second end gives you the same cup facing the other way, so you rarely need to change your grip.
Care and reprocessing
Clean the serrations promptly, because blood and bone dry quickly in them. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner where available. Then rinse, dry fully and sterilize. Also check that the hollow handle is dry inside before storage.
