Description
Littauer Stitch Scissors
Removing sutures goes faster when one blade can hook the thread first, and that is exactly what these littauer suture scissors do. The lower blade ends in a small hook that slides beneath the stitch and lifts it clear of the tissue. Then the upper blade closes over it, so the thread is cut without a sharp point pressing into the wound line.
How the Hooked Blade Lifts a Stitch
The catalogue lists this pattern as a suture scissor with a hooked end to lift suture. In practice, you tuck the hook under the knot, raise it slightly, and close. Because the hook does the lifting, a separate pickup is often unnecessary for simple interrupted stitches. That makes the Littauer a natural fit for post-operative visits after oral surgery.
Five Versions on One Page
- Straight / 11.5 cm: the classic compact Littauer, easy to control in the anterior mouth.
- Angled / 11.5 cm: the same length with an angled working end for stitches around a curve or further back.
- For a little more reach, Straight / 12.5 cm keeps a short, light feel.
- A middle length, Straight / 14 cm, suits deeper sites or larger hands.
- The longest option, Straight / 18 cm, handles a suture line far from the lips.
Picking a Length for Your Suture Sites
First, think about where most of your stitches sit. For incisions near the front teeth, the 11.5 cm straight version keeps your hand close and steady. When access is awkward, however, the angled 11.5 cm model clears the lips and cheek better. Longer straight lengths then suit distal molar sites, palatal flaps, and extraoral work.
What Arrives in the Box
Each Littauer pair is stainless steel, and a US-based inspector checks the hook, blades and joint by hand before dispatch. Since these scissors leave our shelf unsterilized, wash and autoclave them ahead of the first suture removal. Should a hook or pivot prove faulty, every Littauer length carries three years against manufacturing defects, hook included.
The ASTM F899 standard explains the steel grades used for surgical tools. Next, browse our maxillofacial surgery instruments, or compare the fixed-length Long Suture Scissors with the same hooked idea. Billing and returns are covered in the FAQs.
Littauer scissors are intended for licensed, trained clinicians. Reprocessing steps live on our sterilization page, while transit times appear under delivery information.
