Description
Littauer Scissors
Littauer suture removal scissors are made for taking out stitches. On one side, the blade tip is shaped as a little crook that slips under each loop and raises it off the tissue. The other blade then cuts the thread cleanly, so the patient feels little tug. In a dental office, they come out at the post-operative visit after extractions, grafts or periodontal surgery.
Uniband or Featherlite
We stock two Littauer versions, named Uniband and Featherlite. The product names are the only notes our supplier gives. However, the Featherlite name suggests a lighter build, while Uniband is the other pattern. Compare the photos to see the handles and blades before choosing. Many offices simply pick the one that feels better in a smaller hand.
A Quick Suture Removal Routine
First, swab the area so the knots are easy to see. Next, slip the hooked blade beneath the stitch next to the knot. Then cut, grasp the knot with cotton pliers and draw the thread out smoothly. Finally, count the removed sutures against the surgical notes.
Why the Hook Matters
Healing tissue often swells around a stitch, so the thread can sit tight against the mucosa. In that case, a straight scissor tip may pinch tissue. By contrast, the hook gets beneath the thread first, which keeps the cut clean.
Keeping the Blades Aligned
Open and close the scissors after each cycle to confirm they cut through gauze without catching. Also, store them closed so the hook stays protected.
Both versions are stainless steel, and our Atlanta team checks the cut and hinge in the United States before they ship. They arrive non-sterile; clean and sterilize them before the suture appointment. Littauer scissors are covered three years against manufacturing defects whichever of the two versions you buy.
Read ASTM F899 on the steel. More scissors and restorative tools are in the 656 dental category, and the angled Locklin scissors help with posterior stitches. See our FAQs for ordering help.
