Description
Liston Bone Cutting Forceps
These Liston bone cutting forceps divide bone with two sharp blades that meet like strong pliers. This model is 14 cm, or 5.5 inches, long. Unlike a rongeur, it makes a clean cut rather than taking small bites.
Cutter or rongeur
A rongeur has cupped jaws that nibble bone away. A cutter, by contrast, has flat blades that shear straight through. So you reach for the Liston when you need to divide a small piece of bone, not reshape it.
The 14 cm size
At 14 cm, this is a compact cutter. It suits small bone in oral surgery and small procedures elsewhere. In addition, the short length keeps your hand close, which helps with control.
Typical cuts
- Dividing thin bone or bony spurs
- Trimming small graft blocks
- Cutting sharp bone edges flush
- Minor bone work in hand or facial surgery
Cutting cleanly
Position the blades fully around the bone first. Then close in one firm movement. A partial cut followed by twisting can chip the bone, so avoid that.
Sizing the cut
The Liston suits bone thin enough to sit fully between the blades. For thicker bone, a multiple-action cutter needs less force and leaves a cleaner edge. Matching the tool to the bone also keeps the blades sharp for longer.
Protecting the blades
Blade edges dull if they meet metal or very dense bone. Therefore, use the Liston only within its size. After each case, clean the blades, dry the joint, and store the cutter closed.
It is supplied non-sterile and is ready for reuse after cleaning and a sterilization cycle. Its stainless steel complies with ASTM F899. Every Liston carries three years against manufacturing defects, Liston blades included. Where you want a cutter with extra leverage, look at the Böhler multiple action cutter.
