Langer Curettes

A langer curette is a double-ended periodontal instrument for subgingival scaling and root planing. The Langer series pairs a universal-style blade with shanks that are bent for particular regions of the mouth. As a result, one Langer can often clean both mesial and distal surfaces in its area.

These three numbers form the familiar Langer series, each aimed at a different region of the arch. A hygienist who wants full coverage usually stocks all three. However, the shank bends are easiest to judge from the photos, so compare them with the teeth you treat most often.

The catalogue also lists a Langer figure marked HU ½. It sits on the same catalogue page as Fig. 3/4. The catalogue adds no description beyond that label. Therefore, view the photo to see its working ends before you add it to a kit.

Style 2 for Fig. 3/4 and HU ½

Two figures, 3/4 and HU ½, come in a Style 2 version too. That is the same Langer figure set into a different handle pattern drawn on that same catalogue page. Choose it when its handle suits your grip better, after checking the photo.

Sharpening a Langer Blade

A dull curette burnishes calculus instead of removing it. So drag the Langer edge lightly across an acrylic test rod at the start of a clinic day. Then sharpen with light, even strokes to keep the original blade angle.
