Description
Kocher Ligature Needle
The Kocher ligature needle is a strong curved needle with an eye at its tip. Surgeons pass it behind a vessel, thread the eye and draw the ligature back through.
A sturdy build
The shaft is thicker than many light needles. Consequently, it keeps its curve when passing through firm tissue, such as thyroid pedicles or mesentery.
Length of the Kocher ligature needle
At 19 cm, the needle reaches moderately deep structures. In addition, the handle offers a full-hand grip for steady control.
Use in thyroid surgery
Kocher pioneered safe thyroid surgery, and careful vessel ligation was central to that work. Today, this needle still helps tie the superior and inferior thyroid vessels.
Passing and threading
Pass the empty needle behind the vessel first. Then thread the eye on the far side and withdraw, bringing the ligature around in one movement.
Comparing needles
Lighter needles suit fine vessels. By contrast, the Kocher handles firmer pedicles. Many neck trays carry one of each.
