Kocher Grooved Director

The Kocher grooved director is a flat probe with a groove along its length and a slotted plate at the other end. It measures 18 cm. You slide it under a tissue layer and then run a blade along the groove, so the tissue beneath stays safe.

Two working ends

The grooved end guides a scalpel or scissors when you open fascia, a sheath or a fistula tract. Meanwhile, the slotted plate at the handle end serves as a guard in frenotomy: the frenulum sits in the slot, and the plate shields the tongue while you cut. That dual role explains why the pattern has lasted so long.

Using a Kocher grooved director

First, pass the tip gently beneath the layer you want to divide, with the groove facing up. Then lay the blade in the groove and cut along it, while the other hand keeps the director still. Because the probe stays between the blade and the deeper tissue, you work with more control.

Care

Clean the groove with a soft brush after use, since blood dries in the channel. Next, rinse and dry it, and then sterilize to your protocol.
