Description
Kirkland Gingivectomy Knives
A kirkland gingivectomy knife is a periodontal surgical hand instrument with a broad, rounded blade. Surgeons use it for the primary incision when removing or recontouring gingival tissue. The catalogue lists it on its periodontal page next to chisels, under the Kirkland name.
Fig. 1 (15K) and Fig. 2 (16K)
Fig. 1 is marked 15K, and Fig. 2 is marked 16K. Each is a single figure, so the knife has one Kirkland blade. Because the two figures are numbered as a pair, a surgeon usually keeps both to work around an arch. Compare the photos to see how each blade sits.
Double-Ended Fig. ½ (15K/16K)
Fig. ½ puts the 15K and 16K blades on one handle. Accordingly, it saves a swap during surgery. The Style 2 option carries that same pairing on a second handle pattern from the following catalogue page. No caption explains the Kirkland handle change, so rely on the photo.
Patterns A, B and C
We also stock three further Kirkland versions named Pattern A, Pattern B and Pattern C. These have no written catalogue notes. Therefore, look at the photos side by side and choose the blade outline that suits your technique.
Keeping the Edge
A gingivectomy blade cuts soft tissue, so it should stay sharp. After each case, check the edge under a lamp. Then hone it or replace it when it drags.
The knives are stainless steel, and our people check every edge in the United States before an order leaves Atlanta. Kirkland knives arrive non-sterile, so clean and sterilize each blade before surgery. In addition, the Kirkland range is backed three years against manufacturing defects in the blade and its shank.
Read ASTM F899 on steel quality, or open the periodontal and restorative instruments page. For interdental incisions, pair this knife with Goldman-Fox gingivectomy knives. Answers on returns sit in our FAQs.
These knives are for trained periodontal and dental surgeons. Our blade sterilization advice and delivery terms apply.
