Kielland-Luikart Obstetrical (Midwifery) Forceps
Kielland-Luikart forceps combine a Kielland rotational design with Luikart-style solid blades. They measure about 40 cm and have a minimal pelvic curve.
Rotational design
The Kielland design helps rotate the fetal head from a posterior or transverse position. Because the pelvic curve stays minimal, the blades can turn within the pelvis. Then the operator can deliver the head once it faces an anterior position.
Luikart solid blades
A pseudo-fenestrated blade has a recess instead of an open window. So the inner surface stays solid where it rests against the fetal head. In addition, some operators find solid blades easier to apply.
About 40 cm
The long pattern reaches a fetal head that sits at mid-pelvis rather than at the outlet. Therefore, it suits experienced operators with specific training in rotational delivery. Meanwhile, storage calls for a long tray that keeps both blades flat and matched.
Which Kielland pattern
Our standard Kielland pattern suits operators used to the classic blades. By contrast, Kielland-Luikart forceps offer the solid Luikart blade. So the choice rests on each operator’s training and personal preference.
Cleaning Kielland-Luikart forceps
Clean the blade recesses carefully, since pseudo-fenestrations can trap debris. Next, rinse under running water and dry the blades completely. Finally, store the pair together, blades matched and tips protected.
