Description
Javid Atrauma Cardiovascular Carotid Shunt Clamp
The Javid shunt clamp secures a temporary shunt inside the carotid artery during endarterectomy. Its atraumatic design holds the vessel around the shunt while the surgeon clears plaque.
Role in carotid surgery
During endarterectomy, a shunt can keep blood flowing to the brain. So the clamp holds that shunt in place while the artery lies open. Then the team removes the shunt and clamps as the arteriotomy nears closure.
18 cm or 19 cm
Both lengths suit the neck, where exposure stays fairly shallow. However, some surgeons prefer the extra centimeter for hand clearance. Also, a pair of clamps covers both ends of the shunt, one above and one below.
Why the hold stays gentle
The carotid wall needs care, especially near diseased segments. Therefore, atraumatic jaws matter more here than on many other clamps. In addition, a firm hold keeps the shunt in position during the case.
Stocking for carotid sets
Carotid trays usually hold two Javid shunt clamps, one for each end. That way, both ends of the shunt stay under control. Next, add a spare pair if your unit runs several cases a day.
Cleaning Javid shunt clamp
Rinse the clamp before blood dries around the jaw tips. After that, inspect the gripping surfaces for nicks that could mark the artery. Store it in the carotid set so both clamps stay together and reach the next case as a pair.
