Jansen-Middleton Septum Forceps

The Jansen-Middleton septum forceps is a cutting forceps for the nasal septum. Surgeons use the Jansen-Middleton septum forceps to bite away deviated cartilage and bone during septoplasty and submucous resection.

Cutting the septum in bites

A deviated septum often includes a thick ridge of bone or cartilage. Instead of one large cut, this forceps removes it in controlled bites. As a result, the surgeon can judge how much septum still needs trimming.

Two jaw sizes

You can choose a 5 x 15 mm jaw or a 4 x 20 mm jaw. The first is wider and shorter, while the second is narrower and longer. So each jaw suits a slightly different shape of deviation.

When it comes out in a septoplasty

First, the surgeon elevates the mucosal flaps. Next, septum scissors or a knife free the deviated section. Then this forceps trims the remaining spurs until the septum sits straight.

One jaw or both

If you do many septal cases, both jaw sizes on one tray give flexibility. However, a small practice may prefer the 5 x 15 mm version for general use. We can advise if you tell us your usual cases.

Caring for the septum forceps

Rinse off blood and bone fragments as soon as the case ends. Then open the jaws and scrub the cutting edges and joint using a soft nylon brush. Finally, dry the Jansen-Middleton completely before sterilization.
