The Killian septum scissors are long nasal scissors for the septum. Surgeons use Killian septum scissors to cut cartilage and thin bone during septoplasty and submucous resection.

A scissors built for reach

The septum sits deep in the nose, so ordinary scissors fall short. However, long nasal scissors like these let the surgeon cut while the hand stays outside the nostril. The blades can then follow the line of the septum.

During a septoplasty

First, the surgeon elevates the lining from both sides of the septum. Then the scissors cut the deviated cartilage or bone free. Finally, forceps lift out the loose piece so the airway opens up.

Most septum sets combine scissors like these with an elevator, a speculum and cutting forceps. For example, a Jansen-Middleton forceps can remove what the scissors have released. Choose the pieces as a group so that they share a working length.

Caring for your septum scissors

Clean the blades soon after use, before blood dries in the joint. Next, brush the pivot area and open the scissors fully to rinse inside. Also dry them completely, and store them closed to protect the edges.
