Jaeger-Grieshaber Keratome

The Jaeger-Grieshaber keratome is a 13 cm handled knife for opening the eye at the limbus or cornea. You can order it with a curved or a straight blade. Both share the same handle, so the feel stays familiar when you switch.

What a Keratome Does

A keratome makes a planned entry wound. For example, surgeons use this type of knife to open the anterior chamber in cataract and other anterior segment work. The aim is a clean, self-sealing path, so blade control matters more than force.

Curved or Straight Keratome Blade

Pick the straight blade when you approach the limbus head-on and want a direct line from hand to tip. Choose the curved blade instead when the brow or nose gets in the way, because the bend lets you meet the eye at a better angle.

Holding the Jaeger Handle

Hold the handle like a pen, with the ring finger resting on the face or a drape. Then advance the tip in one smooth push. Keep the blade level; a tilt changes the wound shape.

Protecting a Fine Edge

The edge is the whole point of this tool. So never let it touch other instruments in the tray. After use, soak it briefly, then sweep a soft bristle along the spine and dry the blade at once. Finally, check the tip under a loupe before you pack it.

Pairing With Other Knives

Some surgeons pair the Jaeger-Grieshaber keratome with a plain scalpel for skin and lid tasks. That way the keratome edge stays reserved for entry wounds.
