Description

Iwanson Calipers

When a coping or a wax-up must stay within a set thickness, technicians reach for an iwanson caliper. Its curved arms reach around a restoration and read the wall thickness on a scale. We carry two versions from the laboratory page of our supplier catalogue: one for metal and one for wax.

For Metal or For Wax?

The two options share the Iwanson name, but the catalogue describes them differently. So choose by the material on your bench.

  • For Metal, 0 to 10 mm: listed as the Iwanson measuring caliper, with a 0 to 10 mm range for castings and metal frameworks.
  • For Wax, 100 mm: listed as a 100 mm caliper with a decimal spring, intended for wax patterns.

A lab that both waxes and casts will often keep one of each. That way, the wax version never picks up metal grit.

Thickness Checks Before and After Casting

First, measure the wax pattern so the final metal will not be too thin. Next, after casting and finishing, check the metal again at the occlusal and axial walls. As a result, you catch weak spots before porcelain or cementation. The same habit also helps when adjusting a crown chairside.

Handling the Spring and Arms

Close the arms gently on wax, because firm pressure can dent the pattern and give a false reading. In addition, store the caliper flat so the arms stay aligned.

The Iwanson is stainless steel to the ASTM F899 standard. Our team inspects both versions in the United States. They ship non-sterile, so clean and sterilize either one before chairside use. Both Iwanson models are warranted for three years against manufacturing defects in the spring and scale. See our Dental Instruments category, pair the iwanson caliper with the decimal caliper, or visit our FAQs.
