Description
Indiana University Curettes
An indiana university curette is a double-ended periodontal hand instrument for scaling and root planing. The design is area-specific, so the shank bends suit one part of the mouth. Our page carries the anterior and posterior figures from the supplier catalogue, each on two handle patterns.
Anterior, Fig. 13/14
The catalogue labels Fig. 13/14 as the anterior figure. Clinicians reach for it on incisors and canines, where access is straight and the crowns are narrow. Each end mirrors the other, so you switch ends to work the opposite surface.
Posterior, Fig. 17/18
Fig. 17/18 is the posterior figure in the same series. Therefore it is the choice for premolars and molars, where the shank must clear cheeks and crowns. Many hygienists keep both figures together, because a full-mouth appointment calls for each.
Style 2 Handle Options
Both figures also appear with the words Style 2. That marks the same Indiana University figure fitted to an alternative handle drawn on that catalogue sheet. However, the catalogue does not describe that handle, so the photos are your reference. In short, choose by figure first and then by grip.
Keeping a Curette Ready
A curette blade dulls with use. So check the edge under light before each cycle, and sharpen it when it reflects. In addition, store the curette in a cassette so the tips never knock against other steel.
Each curette is stainless steel and gets a blade and shank check in the United States at our Atlanta office. Since curettes ship non-sterile, process yours through cleaning and the autoclave before the first patient. The Indiana University series is also backed three years against manufacturing defects under our standard warranty terms.
See ASTM F899 for the steel standard, then explore our periodontal and restorative instrument range. Many practices pair this curette with Gracey curettes for deeper pockets. Our FAQs cover orders and returns.
