Hartmann Tuning Fork

The Hartmann tuning fork is the plain, stemmed fork found in most ENT and neurology rooms. You can order the Hartmann tuning fork in six pitches, from a deep 128 Hz to a high 4096 Hz.

Choosing a pitch

For the Rinne and Weber tests, 512 Hz is the usual choice, because it balances a long ring with little felt vibration. By contrast, 128 Hz suits vibration sense in the feet and hands. Meanwhile, the higher forks at 1024, 2048 and 4096 Hz help when you want to screen hearing across a wider range.

Putting together a Hartmann tuning fork set

Many clinics start with 512 Hz alone and then add 128 Hz for neurology. If you teach or run a hearing clinic, a full run of pitches lets you compare responses step by step. Each fork ships separately, so you can add to the set over time.

Care

Label each fork by pitch if you keep several, because they look alike at a glance. Wipe them after use, and store the set in a case with a slot for each fork.
