Graefe Cystotome
The graefe cystotome is a classic tool for opening the front of the lens capsule. Ours is 13cm long. Also, you can choose curved left, curved right or straight. That lets you match the tip angle to your approach and your hand.
Opening the capsule
Cataract surgery starts with an opening in the anterior capsule. A cystotome makes that first nick or tear. Then you can extend it in a controlled way. So a good cystotome helps the rest of the case go smoothly. A clean, controlled start also makes the later steps more predictable, so many surgeons spend extra time on this step.
Curved left, curved right or straight
Curved versions help you reach across the capsule from one side. So choose curved left or curved right based on your approach and dominant hand. Meanwhile, the straight version suits a direct line through the incision. In practice, many surgeons stock a curve for each side plus one straight.
Configuration guide
- Curved left: reach from one side
- Curved right: reach from the other side
- Straight: a direct, simple line
- All three are 13cm long
Cystotome care
The cutting point is fine and easy to damage, so handle the Graefe with care. Once the lens is out, flush the tip and wipe off any lens matter with a soft swab. Dry it and slip on a cover. Graefe cystotomes leave us non-sterile, and each one needs a cycle before its first capsule. Treated well, it serves for a long run of cataract cases.
Cystotome cover from Intrace
Each Graefe cystotome has three years against manufacturing defects on its tip and shaft. The steel meets ASTM F899. Browse our cataract surgery tools, or see the malleable Becker cystotome. Finally, our FAQs cover orders and returns.
