Becker Cystotome, Malleable
The becker cystotome is a capsule-opening tool for cataract surgery. This version is malleable and 13cm long. Because you can shape the shaft, you can set the angle that suits your incision and your hand.
What a cystotome does
In cataract surgery, you need to open the front of the lens capsule. A cystotome makes that first cut or tear. Then you can extend the opening with forceps or the same tool. So the cystotome sets the stage for the rest of the case.
Why malleable matters
Every eye and every surgeon is a little different. A malleable shaft lets you bend the working end to your preferred angle. For example, a deeper set eye may need a sharper bend. However, avoid bending it back and forth too often, since repeated bending weakens metal.
Shaping tips for the Becker
- Bend the shaft slowly with smooth, padded pliers.
- Set the angle before sterilization, not during the case.
- Keep the tip itself straight and undamaged.
- Check the bend under magnification.
Becker cleaning and storage
Rinse the Becker right after use, before viscoelastic and lens matter dry on the tip. Then clean it with a soft swab and dry it. Store it so the shaped shaft is not crushed by heavier tools. The Becker ships non-sterile, so a sterilizer pass comes before its first capsule. With care, one malleable shaft serves for a long time, and you can reshape it as your technique changes.
Becker warranty and related items
Becker cystotomes come with three years against manufacturing defects on Becker shafts and tips, though bending damage from use is not a defect. The steel meets ASTM F899. Shop our cataract and eye surgery range, or compare the Graefe cystotome with fixed curves. Our FAQ page has order help.
