Finochietto Rib Spreader

The Finochietto rib spreader is the classic rack-and-pinion retractor for opening the chest. Ten sizes run from a babies’ model to large adult frames.

How it opens

A crank turns a pinion along a toothed rack. So the blades part in small, controlled steps. Then the frame holds its position without an assistant.

Small sizes

The smallest, for babies, measures B15 H15 C75 mm. Next, the child size steps up to B31 H31 C100. Because blade width and depth grow together, each step suits a bigger chest.

Adult sizes

Adult frames reach up to B84 H65 C175 mm. Another large model offers B80 H65 C190 mm. Therefore the range covers big thoracic openings with deep blades.

Aluminum or stainless

Every Finochietto rib spreader size comes in aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum saves weight over a long case. By contrast, stainless steel gives a traditional feel in the hand.

Cleaning Finochietto rib spreader

Clean the rack teeth carefully, because debris there can make the crank stiff. Next, rinse and dry before any water settles in the joints. Also, apply instrument lubricant to the rack after cleaning, then store it.
