Description
Ferris-Smith-Cushing Laminectomy Rongeur Shaft
The Ferris-Smith-Cushing rongeur is a laminectomy and disc rongeur. Surgeons use it to grasp and remove disc material and soft tissue from the intervertebral space during spinal surgery.
Removing disc material
After the surgeon opens the annulus, loose disc fragments need to come out. Therefore, a rongeur with a narrow jaw reaches into the space and pulls them free. This pattern adds a larger bite than many fine rongeurs.
Bite sizes and jaw directions
All versions have an 18 cm shaft. You can choose a bite of 2 x 10, 3 x 10, 4 x 10 or 6 x 12 mm. Then pick straight, upward or downward jaws, which gives twelve options in total.
Why the jaw direction matters
Disc material does not always sit in a straight line from the opening. For example, an upward jaw reaches fragments above the entry point, while a downward jaw reaches below. So many surgeons stock all three directions.
Choosing your combination
First, decide on bite size based on the disc levels you treat most. Next, add jaw directions to match your technique. A common starter set pairs a straight 3 x 10 with an upward and a downward version.
Caring for your Ferris-Smith-Cushing rongeur
Disc tissue lodges between the jaws, so open them and rinse right after use. Then brush the jaws and the joint area. Dry the rongeur and lubricate moving parts before you sterilize it.

Ordering the rongeur
This rongeur has our three-year warranty, so workmanship problems are on us. Our team in Atlanta works each jaw by hand before shipping. For order help, read our rongeur FAQs. We also mention ASTM F899, the specification that defines instrument steels. A related bayonet design is the Gruenwald laminectomy rongeur. Our neurosurgery spine tools show the rest.
For professional use in spinal surgery. The rongeur cleaning and sterilization guide explains our photos and the nickel content of steel, and our returns explanation covers exchanges.
