Description
Cattoni Explorers
An exam starts with touch as much as sight. The cattoni explorer gives you a fine, pointed end to feel enamel texture, open margins and the edges of existing restorations. Our supplier lists the Cattoni pattern on two separate explorer pages, and we stock both versions. Each one is a stainless steel hand instrument sold on its own.
Fig. ½ or Fig. UT ½
Fig. ½ comes from one explorer page and Fig. UT ½ from another. The ½ numbering suggests a paired, double-ended design with matching ends. However, the catalogue does not explain what the UT prefix stands for, and it gives no written difference in shape. So we treat them as two catalogue versions of the Cattoni figure. Compare the photos and choose the one that matches your existing kit.
What a Sharp Explorer Tells You
A good explorer transmits small changes in surface feel to your fingers. For example, a margin gap catches the tip, while sound enamel lets it glide. Then you can chart what you find and decide whether a radiograph or a closer look is needed. Because pressure changes that feedback, a light grip works best.
Keeping the Tip Fine
- Hold the explorer with a modified pen grasp.
- Use gentle strokes across the surface.
- Also, store it so the tip never knocks against other steel.
A bent or blunt tip loses its feedback quickly. So check it under good light before each session.
Each Cattoni explorer is hand-inspected in the United States, with the tip checked under magnification, before it is boxed. No Cattoni explorer leaves us sterile; your team should clean it and run an autoclave load before charting begins. In addition, the explorer has our assurance of three years against manufacturing defects that come from its production.
The steel grade meets ASTM F899. Pair it with the matching Cattoni probes for a periodontal and caries exam set, look through the diagnostic, periodontal and restorative instruments, or visit our FAQs.
Explorers are intended for licensed dentists and hygienists. Before use, see our fine-tip care advice and how orders ship from Atlanta.
