Description
Elschnig Cyclodialysis Spatula
The Elschnig cyclodialysis spatula pairs a 1.2 mm blade width with a 12 mm length. It offers a firm, flat surface, so it moves tissue inside the eye with ease. Many surgeons see it as a sturdy, all-purpose spatula for the anterior chamber.
Why 1.2 x 12 mm feels balanced
The 1.2 mm width gives enough body to sweep without flexing. Meanwhile, the 12 mm length reaches across a good part of the chamber. Together, they make a blade that is neither too fine nor too bulky.
Anton Elschnig and the eye
Elschnig was an Austrian eye surgeon who worked in Prague around 1900. Several tools still bear his name, from forceps to spatulas. This one also follows the same idea: simple steel, honest shape and easy care.
Elschnig spatula uses
Typical moves:
- Sweeping the angle
- Breaking light iris adhesions
- Guiding a lens edge or haptic
- Clearing strands from the wound
Choosing between Elschnig and Castroviejo
Both have a 1.2 mm blade. The difference is length: the Castroviejo is 10 mm, while the Elschnig is 12 mm. So pick the Elschnig when you want a bit more reach, and the Castroviejo when you want a shorter, stiffer feel.
Elschnig blade inspection
Before each case, sight down the blade to check that it runs straight. Then feel the edges with a gloved fingertip. If anything feels rough, set the spatula aside for review.
Elschnig order notes
Elschnig spatulas come unsterile. Clean the 1.2 mm Elschnig blade and sterilize it first; then it stays in rotation for many anterior chamber cases. Elschnig steel meets ASTM F899. In addition, we cover the Elschnig for three years against manufacturing defects. Visit our ophthalmology category for more, or see the ultra-fine Barraquer-Fino spatula. The FAQs cover ordering.
