Description
Derf Needle Holder, Serrated Carbide Tip
The Derf is one of the smallest classic needle holders. This derf carbide needle holder measures 12.1 cm and closes onto small needles with a serrated carbide tip. Because the body is short, the instrument rests lightly in the hand and moves quickly between stitches.
A Compact Pattern With a Firm Bite
Short jaws place the grip right at the end of the instrument. As a result, small needles stay under fine control while you work around papillae or along a narrow lip incision. Meanwhile, the carbide insert holds the needle steadily, so it is less likely to twist as you drive it.
Why the Tip Is Serrated Carbide
Carbide is harder than the surrounding stainless steel. For that reason, its serration pattern lasts through repeated clinical cycles and keeps a consistent grip. The supplier catalogue lists this model specifically as a serrated carbide tip, so the gripping surface is the defining feature of the page.
Choosing the Derf Over a Longer Holder
Pick the Derf when the needle is small and the site is near the front of the mouth or on the skin. For example, it suits:
- Anterior flap closure and frenectomy stitches.
- Soft tissue graft fixation with small curved needles.
- Facial skin repairs where a long holder feels clumsy.
When the site lies behind the molars, however, a 15 cm holder gives easier access.
Checked in the US, Supplied Non-Sterile
The Derf frame is stainless steel. Before shipping, an inspector at our American facility tests the ratchet and the carbide tip closure. Each holder leaves unsterilized, so a wash and an autoclave cycle should come before any patient contact. Derf holders from Intrace USA are backed for three years against manufacturing defects, tips and ratchet together.
Background on surgical steel grades is in ASTM F899. Also browse our maxillofacial instruments, or look at the delicate Per Peri Needle Holder for finer periodontal sutures. Common questions are answered in the FAQs.
Derf holders are supplied for trained clinical users. Reprocessing tips appear on the care and sterilization page, and order transit appears on shipping and delivery.
