Description
Darby-Perry Scalers
The Darby-Perry scaler belongs to a family of hand instruments named after a classic restorative and periodontal pattern series. On this page it comes in two figures. Hygienists use a scaler like this to lift supragingival deposits with short, controlled pull strokes. Then a curette usually follows for finer root surface work.
Fig. 5 Versus Fig. 6
The two options are labelled Fig. 5 and Fig. 6. Our supplier catalogue gives no caption for either, so we will not guess at blade angle or length. Instead, open both product photos and compare the working ends side by side. When your current tray already holds one of these numbers, reorder that number so nothing changes in your hand. However, if you are starting fresh, buy one of each and decide at the chair.
Why a Pull-Stroke Scaler Still Earns Its Place
Ultrasonic units handle much of today’s calculus removal. Still, a hand scaler gives a feel for tooth surface that powered tips cannot. For example, it helps confirm that a margin is smooth after debridement. It also works quietly, which suits patients who dislike ultrasonic noise.
Sharpening Between Sessions
Keep a fine stone near the sterilization area. Because a dull blade burnishes calculus rather than removing it, test the edge on a plastic stick before each tray goes out. Then hone only until the edge catches, so the blade keeps its profile longer.
Material and Our Promise
Made from stainless steel conforming to ASTM F899, each Darby-Perry scaler gets a visual and tactile check by our team in the US. If the steel or the finishing proves faulty, we cover the instrument for three years against manufacturing defects, excluding normal sharpening wear. Since we do not sterilize before dispatch, clean the scaler and autoclave it ahead of patient use.
