Description
Columbia Curettes
The Columbia pattern is a long-standing universal curette design taught in many hygiene programs. Each columbia curette has paired blades on a double-ended handle, so one instrument covers opposing surfaces. Clinicians use these curettes to remove calculus and smooth root surfaces above and below the gumline. Our supplier lists three Columbia figures, and this page offers each one in more than one version.
Fig. 2R/2L, Fig. 4R/4L and Fig. 13/14
The R and L in 2R/2L and 4R/4L mark right and left blades, which mirror each other. Fig. 13/14 uses a plain paired number instead. The catalogue does not give shank lengths or blade angles for any figure. So the simplest way to choose is to compare the photos, or to reorder the figures already on your cassette. Many hygienists keep at least two of the three.
Style 2: The Second Catalogue Row
Every figure also appears on the following catalogue page. We list those as Fig. 2R/2L, Style 2; Fig. 4R/4L, Style 2; and Fig. 13/14, Style 2. Each is the same Columbia figure shown with another handle pattern, and the supplier adds no detail beyond that. Therefore, use the photos to pick the handle that suits your grip.
The Titanium 13/14
Fig. 13/14, Titanium is the Columbia 13/14 taken from an instrument set where the catalogue lists it as titanium. It is the only titanium option here. All other Columbia options are stainless steel.
Keeping Blades Effective
- Sharpen often, using light passes on a stone.
- Check the edge under a light before each patient.
- Replace a curette once the blade grows thin.
Each Columbia curette is inspected in the United States for edge and blade symmetry before it leaves our warehouse. It ships non-sterile, so clean and sterilize every curette before scaling begins. In addition, every Columbia figure and handle comes with three years against manufacturing defects under our standing policy.
The stainless options meet ASTM F899. For area-specific work, add our Gracey curettes, browse the diagnostic, periodontal and restorative instruments, or see our FAQ page.
Columbia curettes are intended for hygienists, periodontists and dentists trained in scaling. Please read our curette care notes and parcel delivery information.
