Description

Cleveland-Gardner Bone Rongeurs

The Cleveland-Gardner bone rongeurs are the end-cutting member of the Cleveland range, and they exist for one situation: bone you can reach but cannot get beside. The beak faces straight down the axis of the instrument, so the bite lands directly ahead of the tip instead of across it.

What end cutting buys you

A front- or side-cutting rongeur needs clearance beside the bone for the outer half of its beak. An end-cutting beak asks for none, because both halves close in line with the shaft. Consequently you can work down a narrow channel — an interdental crest, a socket wall with a standing tooth beside it — and stop precisely where the tip stops. The trade is sight: your own hand and shank sit between your eye and the cut, so the first bite is taken more by feel than by looking.

Where it differs from the numbered figures

Figures 3 through 10 of the Cleveland range all present their beak at an angle to the handle, whether forward or to the side. This one does not, and that single change is the reason to own it. It is not a substitute for the others, and it is a poor general-purpose rongeur; keep it for the approach nothing else fits.

Key features

  • End-cutting beak, taking bone in line with the shaft
  • 6 ½″ overall
  • Leaf-sprung handle with a box-jointed head
  • Cupped, sharpened beak rim
  • Stainless steel throughout, and autoclavable

On the tray

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons reach for the Cleveland-Gardner bone rongeurs during alveoloplasty and pre-prosthetic work, where a crest has to come down evenly between standing teeth. Meanwhile implant surgeons use it to level a ridge before placement. It rarely earns a place as the only rongeur on a tray; rather, it sits alongside one or two of the angled figures.

Care

An end-cutting rim wears at its front edge, which is also the hardest part to see. So hold it to the light and look straight into the beak before each case, since a rounded front edge will push bone rather than cut it. Rinse the cup before debris dries, and store the handle open.
