Brodie Probe Director

The Brodie probe is a grooved probe director, 20 cm long, with a flat, split plate for a handle. Surgeons pass the Brodie probe along an anal fistula tract and then cut down onto the groove to lay the tract open.

How the groove helps

Once the probe sits in the tract, the groove gives the blade a channel to follow. As a result, the cut stays on the line of the fistula and away from the tissue beside it. Meanwhile, the split plate handle gives a firm hold and shows at a glance which way the groove faces.

Brodie probe or Lockhart-Mummery?

Both come from the same catalogue page of rectal probes. The Brodie is longer and has a groove, so it works as a director. By contrast, the Lockhart-Mummery probe is slimmer and comes with different tip curves for finding the internal opening.

Care

Brush the groove clean straight after use, since debris collects in the channel. Then rinse, dry, and sterilize to your protocol.
