Bishop-Harman Fixation Forceps

The Bishop-Harman fixation forceps is a delicate tissue forceps with two sets of options. Choose plain tips or 1:2 teeth. Then choose a 0.5 mm or a 0.8 mm tip width. So you can tailor the grip to the tissue in front of you.

Plain or 1:2 teeth

Plain tips press tissue without piercing it. By contrast, 1:2 teeth bite in and hold firm. Choose plain for thin, fragile layers, and toothed for skin edges or tougher tissue.

0.5 mm or 0.8 mm tip

A 0.5 mm tip takes a small, neat bite. Meanwhile, a 0.8 mm tip spreads the grip and holds more tissue. So the narrow tip suits fine work, while the wider one suits broader handling.

Where it is often used

Bishop-Harman forceps commonly appear in eyelid and oculoplastic sets. They also suit general delicate tissue work around the eye. However, use them as your training and protocols guide. For instance, they help with skin and muscle layers in lid repair.

Combining the options

Four combinations are possible. For example, plain at 0.5 mm makes a gentle, precise tool. On the other hand, toothed at 0.8 mm gives the firmest hold.

Care and inspection

Rinse the tips after use and brush them gently. Then dry the forceps and inspect the teeth or plain faces under a loupe. Finally, store it with a guard. Also, label each version, since they look alike.
