Description
Berens Advancement Forceps
The Berens advancement forceps is a strabismus tool. It holds an extraocular muscle while you shorten it or move its insertion forward. So the muscle stays under control as sutures go in. Our version runs 10 cm long.
Why advancement needs a clamp
In an advancement or resection, the surgeon takes up slack in a muscle. That means the muscle must stay gripped across its width. A clamp like the Berens does this job, while your hands stay free to pass sutures.
Placing it across the muscle
First, hook the muscle and expose it. Then slide the jaws across the belly, back from the insertion. Close them evenly, and check that the full width sits inside the grip before you go on.
- 10 cm working length
- Grips a rectus muscle across its width
- For advancement and resection steps
- Reusable after a full sterilization cycle
Getting used to the Berens
At 10 cm, the forceps gives a calm, controlled reach over the globe. In addition, its weight helps it rest where you place it. Many teams pair it with a muscle hook and a fine needle holder on the same tray.
Keeping the jaws true
Strabismus clamps work only if the jaws meet along their length. For this reason, close the clamp under a light after each wash. If you see a gap, stop using it and send it for review.
Adding the Berens to your strabismus set
Like the rest of our muscle tools, the Berens arrives non-sterile. Berens clamps are backed for three years against manufacturing defects. Berens jaws are stainless steel to ASTM F899.
