Bakes Gall Duct Dilator, Malleable

Description

Bakes Gall Duct Dilator, Malleable

The Bakes duct dilator gently widens the common bile duct and checks it for stones. A smooth olive tip sits on a malleable shaft that bends to follow the duct.

Thirteen figures

Figures run from 1 to 13, with olive sizes increasing in steps. Therefore, the surgeon can dilate gradually. Meanwhile, the smallest figures also act as probes.

Olive tip of the Bakes duct dilator

The rounded olive spreads the duct evenly as it passes. As a result, it dilates without cutting. It also lets the surgeon feel for stones and narrowings.

Malleable shaft

You can bend the shaft by hand to match the duct path. Consequently, the olive follows curves smoothly. Avoid sharp, repeated bends at the same point.

Typical procedures

Common bile duct exploration uses it most. For example, it checks that the duct drains into the bowel. It also dilates the lower end before passing other tools.

Technique

Start with a small figure and move up one size at a time. Then pass each olive gently until it meets resistance. Never force a larger size through a tight segment.

Bakes duct dilator options

Care

Straighten the shaft gently after use. Clean the olive and shaft, then dry. Store figures in order in a rack.

Order basics

Each Bakes figure carries three years against manufacturing defects. Olive and shaft both. An Atlanta colleague studies the Bakes pattern in detail prior to packing. Busy clinics keep a second dilator so a case never waits. Related options live in the general surgery listings. For more on instrument steels, read ASTM F899.
