Description
Poole Suction Tube
The Poole suction tube clears large volumes of fluid from the abdomen. A perforated outer sheath spreads the suction over many holes, so bowel and omentum are not pulled into the tip.
The perforated sheath
Dozens of small holes share the suction load. Consequently, the tube keeps working even when some holes rest against tissue.
Length of the Poole suction tube
At 22 cm, it reaches deep into the pelvis and flanks. Meanwhile, the straight shaft gives a direct line.
Typical uses
General and trauma surgeons use it during laparotomy and washout. It also clears ascites and blood quickly.
Technique
Place the tube in the deepest pool and let it work. Then move it to the next pool.
Removing the sheath
The sheath slides off for cleaning or for focused suction. Therefore, one instrument can work two ways.
Pairing
The Baby-Poole suits smaller spaces. Additionally, many trays carry both sizes.
Poole suction tube in trauma
In trauma laparotomy, the abdomen may contain a large volume of blood. Because the sheath keeps working even when partly covered, the team can clear the field fast and find the source of bleeding.
