Ash Plastic Filling
Plastic filling instruments are the workhorses of restorative dentistry. They carry and shape any material that is soft when placed, from composite and glass ionomer to temporary cements and liners. Each ash plastic filling instrument on this page follows the Ash eponym pattern. Five versions are offered, numbered 1 to 5, and each one is sold separately.
Choosing Among Patterns 1 to 5
The option labels are the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. No further written description comes with these numbers in our source list. For that reason, the five option photos are your guide to each blade and nib outline. Look at the working ends side by side, then pick the shapes that cover your usual restorations. Many dentists end up with two or three numbers rather than all five.
Placing and Shaping Restorative Materials
A typical plastic instrument has a flat blade at one end for carrying and smoothing material. Often it has a condensing or shaping nib at the other. In a Class II composite, for example, a clinician might adapt material against the matrix with one end. Next, the other end shapes the marginal ridge. Since every number differs, check the photos to see which ends each Ash pattern offers.
Ash Instruments on a Restorative Tray
Composite tends to stick to many surfaces. So keep the working ends clean and dry during placement, wiping them between increments. In addition, avoid using these instruments to lever or pry, since bending a thin blade spoils its profile.
Our United States team checks every Ash pattern for straight blades and clean ends before shipment. Then, because it arrives unsterilized, wash and autoclave each instrument first. Intrace USA also gives each numbered Ash pattern three years against manufacturing defects nib to blade.
The steel is made to ASTM F899 standards for surgical stainless. See all restorative hand instruments, add a Woodson Plastic Filling Instrument for a different blade outline, or read our FAQs.
These instruments are for trained dental professionals only. See our plastic instrument care advice and the shipping and delivery page.
