Adson Elevator

The Adson elevator is a periosteal elevator that lifts soft tissue off bone. Neurosurgeons use it to strip pericranium from the skull and to clear muscle from the spine before bone work begins.

Clearing bone before the next step

Drills, punches and rongeurs need clean bone to work well. Therefore, the elevator comes first in many openings. It slides under the periosteum and peels it back, which exposes the surface underneath.

Using it during exposure

First, the surgeon incises the periosteum with a scalpel. Next, the elevator lifts the edge and sweeps along the bone. Meanwhile, an assistant keeps the flap back with a retractor, so the view stays clear.

Pairing it with other elevators

Many teams carry more than one elevator because tissue thickness varies. For instance, a raspatory with a set blade width can handle broader surfaces. The elevator then covers general stripping and tighter corners.

Caring for your Adson elevator

Tissue and blood dry on the blade fast, so rinse it right after the case. Then scrub both faces with a soft brush. Also check the edge for nicks before you dry, wrap and sterilize it.
