Description
Schmieden-Taylor Neurosurgical Scissors
Schmieden-Taylor scissors are dura scissors for neurosurgery. Surgeons use them to open and cut the dura mater in cranial and spinal cases.
Designed for the dura
Cutting dura needs a clean, controlled blade that does not snag the tissue below. Therefore surgeons have long favored this pattern for the dural opening. It also cuts other membranes neatly.
The 18 cm length
We carry the scissors at 18 cm. That length works well at the surface and at moderate depths, so it suits most dural openings in cranial and spinal cases. For blade or tip sizes, send us a message and we will check.
Typical steps
First, the surgeon lifts the dura with a hook and makes a small nick. Next, the scissors extend the opening along the planned line. Finally, the surgeon folds the dural flap back.
Choosing dura scissors
Shorter scissors give nimble control near the surface. However, deeper cases may need a longer pair such as the 23 cm Olivecrona. So many trays carry both lengths.
Caring for your Schmieden-Taylor scissors
Rinse the blades after use and keep the tips protected. Then clean the joint with a small nylon brush and detergent. Dry them completely, apply a light lubricant and sterilize.

Ordering from Intrace USA
We add a three-year warranty to these scissors, covering workmanship defects. In our Atlanta office, a team member tests and inspects each pair by hand. Read our FAQs for order guidance. For material, ASTM F899 is the steel standard for surgical instruments. For finer dissection, compare the Potts-Smith scissors. Also look through the neurosurgery catalog.
For professional use. The sterilization and care guide explains why images vary a little and why stainless contains nickel. Our returns page lists the process.
